Information on Getting Married in Australia

Couple at sunsetTo get married in Australia you will need the following:

  • Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)
  • Original Birth Certificates (if born in Australia) or;
  • Passport
  • Original Birth Certificates or International Passport (if coming from overseas);
  • Original Decree Absolute (if you have been married before and divorced);
  • Death Certificate of previous spouse (if you have been widowed);
  • Proof of Name Change (if you have legally changed your name)

Notice of Intended Marriage

This form needs to be lodged with an Authorised Celebrant one full calendar month prior to the marriage ceremony. It is important to take the time to read the instructions on the NOIM, as this is the information that will appear on your Marriage Certificate. Full names, mean all the names listed on your identity documents. I will also be able to assist you in filling out this form if you have any problems.

Proof of Identity documents

Original documents to be sighted by your Celebrant prior to marriage, Birth Certificate or Passports/and other identification/other relevant documents / all certificates MUST be the original document.

Witnesses

You will need two people (one each) to witness the ceremony. This can be anyone over the age of 18 – parent, sibling, someone from the bridal party etc
